There are golf resorts, and then there is Mission Hills. Having heard so much about it over the years, I was excited to finally experience it for myself. Splitting my time between Mission Hills Dongguan and Mission Hills Shenzhen gave me the chance to experience not only three incredible golf courses, but also the outstanding accommodation, seamless service and a taste of the local culture. Here’s what stood out from my trip.

The first thing that struck me when I arrived at Mission Hills Dongguan was just how effortless the entire experience felt. This isn’t simply a golf resort—it’s an entire golfing world built around making life easy for travelling golfers. From the moment I checked in, everything was designed so I could focus on enjoying the golf rather than worrying about the logistics. Despite the enormous size of the property, it never felt overwhelming, with clear signage, friendly staff and efficient shuttle services connecting every part of the resort.

The clubhouse itself is unlike anything I’d experienced before. It’s absolutely enormous, yet every space serves a purpose. Walking through it feels more like visiting a premium shopping precinct than a traditional golf clubhouse, with flagship stores from virtually every major golf brand you could think of. Whether you’re looking for the latest clubs, apparel, shoes or accessories, there’s an incredible selection all under one roof. Even if you don’t intend to buy anything, it’s worth allowing time simply to browse because the range of equipment on display is genuinely impressive.

Perhaps my favourite part of the entire experience was how seamlessly the resort handled my golf clubs. At the end of each round, I’d simply leave my bag with the staff and think no more about it. The following morning it would already be waiting on my assigned buggy, cleaned and ready for the day’s round. It sounds like a small detail, but after travelling overseas with golf clubs, not having to drag them between the hotel, clubhouse and practice facilities every day made the whole trip feel incredibly relaxing. It’s one of those little touches that perfectly sums up Mission Hills—everything is done to an exceptionally high standard so you can simply enjoy your golf holiday.

One of the biggest attractions of Mission Hills is the sheer variety of golf on offer, and during my stay I was fortunate enough to play the Norman Course, the Leadbetter Course and the famous World Cup Course. What impressed me most wasn’t simply the quality of each course—it was how different they all felt. Rather than playing variations of the same layout, each course had its own personality and challenged me in completely different ways.

The World Cup Course is undoubtedly one of the flagship layouts at Mission Hills, and it certainly plays like it. Every hole feels like it was built to host championship golf, with immaculate conditioning, outstanding bunkering and greens that demand precision. It’s a course that rewards smart course management just as much as good ball striking, and standing on many of the tee boxes you can’t help but imagine the world’s best players competing there. It’s easy to understand why it has hosted some of golf’s biggest international events.

The Norman and Leadbetter Courses offered an entirely different experience, but one that was equally memorable. Both weave through the natural hills and forests surrounding the resort, creating spectacular scenery from the opening tee to the final green. There are elevated tee shots, dramatic valleys and panoramic views that constantly remind you you’re playing somewhere truly special. The Norman Course has a bold, strategic feel with plenty of risk-and-reward opportunities – a typical tough Norman design, while the Leadbetter Course blends beautiful landscapes with thoughtful shot-making that keeps every hole interesting. Together they perfectly showcase the diversity of golf available at Mission Hills and are a major reason why I already want to return.

During my stay I chose the Grand Deluxe Lake View Room at Mission Hills Resort Dongguan, and it exceeded my expectations. The room was spacious, beautifully appointed and offered everything I’d want after spending a full day on the golf course. Large windows filled the room with natural light, while the modern furnishings and quality finishes gave it a genuine luxury feel without being over the top.

The standout feature was undoubtedly the view. Looking out across the Olazábal Course and the lake each morning was something I never got tired of. Watching golfers make their way around the course while enjoying a coffee from the balcony was the perfect way to start each day before heading out for my own round. It’s the sort of outlook that constantly reminds you why you’ve travelled all this way.

I also took the opportunity to inspect one of the Grande Deluxe Rooms at Mission Hills Shenzhen. It’s still a very comfortable and high-quality hotel with excellent facilities, but compared to Dongguan it does feel slightly older in both its design and finishes. That’s certainly not a criticism—the accommodation is still very good—but if I were recommending one place to stay for golfers, I’d choose Mission Hills Dongguan. The rooms feel fresher, the resort atmosphere is more relaxing, and with the complimentary shuttle between the two properties, you’re never far from any of the courses anyway.

While the golf was obviously the highlight of my trip, one of the biggest surprises was just how much I enjoyed the local food. Chinese cuisine is so much more diverse than many people imagine, and every meal seemed packed with flavour. Whether it was a bubbling hot pot shared around the table or perfectly roasted char siu alongside crispy pork that practically melted in your mouth, every dish felt authentic and memorable. The freshness of the ingredients and the balance of sweet, savoury and aromatic flavours made every meal feel like an experience rather than simply something to eat – just what you would expect when eating Chinese food in China! I also got to experience one of the famous bubble teas while in Gankeng Ancient Town, and highly recommend you get one on your visit!

Another highlight away from the golf course was visiting Gankeng Ancient Town. Wandering through its narrow laneways, traditional architecture and historic buildings offered a fascinating contrast to Shenzhen’s modern skyline. It’s an easy place to spend several hours exploring boutique shops, local craft stores, tea houses and cafés, while also learning a little about the region’s history and Hakka culture. The atmosphere is relaxed, authentic and incredibly photogenic, making it well worth adding to any Mission Hills itinerary.

One of the things I enjoyed most about this trip was that it never felt like I was confined to a golf resort. Mission Hills gives you access to some of the finest golf in Asia, but it’s equally easy to venture out and experience fantastic food, rich local culture and historic attractions before returning to first-class accommodation at the end of the day. For me, that balance is what transforms a great golf trip into a truly memorable holiday.

After finally experiencing Mission Hills for myself, I completely understand why it’s considered one of the world’s great golf destinations. The championship golf courses are exceptional, but it’s the complete experience that sets it apart—from the effortless service and luxurious accommodation to the incredible facilities and easy access to local culture and cuisine. Whether you’re visiting for three rounds or a week-long golf holiday, everything is designed to let you relax and enjoy every moment.
