I recently had the opportunity to visit one of my favourite golf destinations, Northern Vietnam. There is just something unique and special about this part of the world, with excellent golf, unique and authentic culture coupled with great accommodation options and dishes that will make anyone’s tastebuds dance. I wanted to give all golfers an insight into all of this from my latest Hanoi and Halong Bay experience.
Upon arriving in Hanoi, I checked into my hotel and immediately set out to explore the vibrant surroundings of the city. Hanoi’s Old Quarter is, without a doubt, one of the most charming and lively areas to stay in. Known for its narrow streets, French colonial architecture, and bustling atmosphere, it offers an array of attractions, from quirky boutiques to local eateries, making it an ideal spot for tourists. The area is particularly renowned for its wide variety of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops, each providing a perfect opportunity to sit back, relax, and observe the fast-paced rhythm of daily life in the city.

One of the most captivating sights in the Old Quarter is Hoan Kiem Lake, which serves as a central hub for both locals and tourists. In the early evening, the lake comes alive with joggers, families, and street vendors. I was particularly struck by the sight of numerous locals jogging around the lake’s perimeter, making the area resemble a marathon race in full swing. This activity, combined with the scenic beauty of the surroundings, offered a perfect introduction to the vibrant pulse of Hanoi. At the heart of the lake lies Ngoc Son Temple, also known as the “Temple of the Jade Mountain.” This picturesque pagoda, perched on a small island, is accessible via a charming red bridge and provides an excellent spot for photography and reflection, encapsulating the serene side of Hanoi amidst the urban hustle.
A Golfer’s Paradise: Exploring Hanoi’s Courses
During my stay in Hanoi, I had the opportunity to experience three remarkable golf courses: Skylake Golf Club, Van Tri Golf Club, and the Kings Course on Kings Island. Each of these courses provided a distinct experience, showcasing the diverse golfing landscape in Vietnam.
Among them, the experience at Kings Island was by far the most memorable. When my driver initially dropped me off, I found myself on the edge of a quiet lake with no golf course in sight. For a moment, I wondered if he had made a wrong turn. However, within minutes, a speedboat arrived to whisk me away across the water. A short boat ride later, I arrived at Kings Island, where I was warmly greeted by a team of around twenty caddies waiting at the jetty.
Kings Island is home to three different courses, with the Kings Course standing out as the most spectacular. The course itself offers breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes, with rolling greens framed by serene water features and dense, lush vegetation. The layout of the course is challenging yet rewarding, providing a thrilling test for golfers of all skill levels. The sense of isolation and tranquility on Kings Island, paired with the stunning natural beauty, made this experience unforgettable. I look forward to returning and reliving this unique golfing experience again.

From Hanoi to Halong Bay: A Scenic Journey
After spending four exciting nights in Hanoi, I set off for the next leg of my journey to Halong Bay, which is located around two hours away by car. The drive itself was scenic and pleasant, offering a chance to take in the picturesque Vietnamese countryside. To break up the journey, I made a stop at Chi Linh Star Golf Club for an 18-hole round. This well-maintained course offered a refreshing change of pace and provided a perfect opportunity to enjoy more golfing amidst the stunning natural scenery of Northern Vietnam.

Upon arrival at Halong Bay, I was immediately struck by its otherworldly beauty. Recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, Halong Bay is a natural marvel renowned for its emerald-green waters and thousands of towering limestone islands. The golf course at FLC Halong Bay is one of the most photographed courses in Asia, and it’s easy to see why. With sweeping views of the bay and its iconic rock formations, the course is as much a feast for the eyes as it is a challenge for golfers. While the layout itself is somewhat disjointed, with a few holes located in areas far removed from the central clubhouse, the views from the 8th hole onwards are absolutely spectacular and make the course a must-play for any avid golfer visiting the region.

A Cruise Through Halong Bay: A Memorable Conclusion to the Journey
To conclude my visit to Halong Bay, I spent the final night aboard a cruise that sailed through the breathtaking waters of the bay. This experience is something that everyone should try at least once in their lifetime. The cruise itself was a perfect way to relax and take in the dramatic landscapes that Halong Bay is famous for. The highlight of the evening was being moored among the towering limestone cliffs, where I participated in a Vietnamese cooking class. As the sun set over the bay, I learned how to prepare traditional dishes, while surrounded by the surreal beauty of the landscape. The combination of cooking, cultural immersion, and natural beauty made for a truly unforgettable experience.

As my journey through Northern Vietnam came to a close, I reflected on the incredible variety of experiences I had. From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the serene lakes of Kings Island and the awe-inspiring vistas of Halong Bay, Vietnam is a destination that offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re a golf enthusiast, a culture lover, or someone seeking to immerse themselves in nature, this region of Vietnam will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.
