SURABAYA

Surabaya, located on the island of Java, is Indonesia’s second largest city. This port city located in East Java was central to Indonesia gaining its independence from its Dutch occupiers, when in 1945 local Indonesian revolutionaries climbed to the top of Hotel Yamato (now known as Hotel Majapahit), scaled up the flag pole, and tore the blue part of the Dutch flag off. That is how Indonesia’s current flag came to be, and was the start of the end of the Dutch occupation in Indonesia.

Surabaya is surrounded by lush green forests, and twin volcanoes known as Arjuno and Welirang. Surabaya’s central district still gives a very traditional feel, and the city is great to explore on foot while visiting many local shops, restaurants and handcrafts shops. The golf in Surabaya is also spectacular, with some great courses set in the forest and fauna that surrounds the city. It is great to include this as part of a longer trip together with Bali or Jakarta.

Best of Surabaya City Tour

This full day tour starts with your private guide taking you through Chinatown and the famous Surabaya Red Bridge to see the hustle and bustle of the morning market and how locals start their day. From there, head to Kampung Arab which is one of the oldest districts in Surabaya and still inhabited by decedents of the original Arab trade merchants. While there, visit the Old Sunan Ampel Mosque which was founded in the 15^th century. From there, visit a colourful and vibrant spice market, and take your pick of some of the traditional spices that you would like to take back home with you. Finish the day with a trip to the coastal town of Pasuruan and visit the ancient Belahan temple. During the day, you will enjoy a local Surabaya lunch.

Mt. Bromo & Madakaripura Waterfall Tour

The volcanoes of East Java have helped shape the region as it is today. With this full day tour, take a trip to the majestic Mt. Bromo and do the leasurely hike up the mountain, which provides fantastic views down over the valley. Explore the volcano and the crater, and our guide will give you some history about the volcano and the role it has played in the region. From there, head down to the Madakaripura Waterfall. This is one of the more famous waterfalls in the area, and be sure to check out how exactly the water makes its way from the top to the bottom. Enjoy some leisure time in and around the waterfall before heading back to your hotel. During the day, a local lunch is provided.
